Sudanese teenager Nouredin Yahya beat Tanzanian Ibrahim Shabani by 7-5, 6-3. sets to win the International tennis Federation's sanctioned under-13 championship at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club yesterday.
In the girls category another Sudanese player, Samaha Adam, beat Rwanda's Nizel Umumararungu by two straight sets of 6-2, 6-2 to fly back home with the trophy.
Adam beat Ethiopia's Teklu Samrawit by 4-6, 6-4 ,6-2 at the semi-final stage played in the morning before basking in glory later in the evening.
The Sudanese boy breezed past Ethiopia's Samrawit by two straight sets.
Tanzanian Shabani sent packing Iradukunda Guy from Burundi by 6-2, 6-4 in a semi-final match played a day before to cruise into yesterday's final.
It was a fiercely fought opening set that was eventually decided on tier breaker in favour of the Sudanese teen.
The home boy lost steam in the second set, to the advantage of the eventual winner as he went down 3-6.
The week-long championship, organised by ITF and the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT). It has been staged to promote tennis at the grassroots.
The chairman of the Tanzania Tennis Association, Dennis Makoi, said despite failing to win the title, the home boys played impressively to herald growth in the game.
