KHARTOUM, Sudan — Sudan's former President Ahmed al-Mirghani has died at 67 in Egypt, family friends said Monday.
Mr. Mirghani, who died late Sunday, was removed from power 19 years ago by the military coup that brought the current regime of President Omar al-Bashir to power. He came from a prominent Sudanese family that heads a Sufi Muslim sect that traces its lineage back to the Prophet Muhammad.
The cause of death was not known, but family friend Ali Ahmed al-Said said the ex-president had respiratory problems. He said the body was to be flown to Khartoum on Wednesday for burial.
Mr. Mirghani headed the last democratically elected government in Sudan, from 1986 to 1989.
