Press Release
STATEMENT ON THE CURRENT SITUATION
IN THE
SUDAN
FOLLOWING
THE ICC PROSECUTOR'S APPLICATION
On July 14, 2008, the court’s prosecutor, Luis Moreno Ocampo, asked Pre-Trial
Chamber I to issue an arrest warrant for President Omar Hassan Ahmed al-Bashir on
charges of crimes against humanity and genocide.
The ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber will review the information in the prosecutor’s application to
determine whether to grant the request for a warrant. It's only after the Pre- Trial chamber
judges satisfaction that there are “reasonable grounds to believe”
that al-Bashir has
committed ICC crimes, that an arrest warrant will be necessary to issue to bring him to trial.
We herewith express our support for the above mentioned legal procedures
Maintaining our conviction that no one person should be above the law in war crimes
against humanity, genocide or torture.
Since the Sudanese government has shown no willingness to collaborate with the
International Community on insuring security
and stopping the war in
Darfur and
refused to surrender the first two suspects Ahmed Haroun and Ali Kosheib for their
alleged leading roles in war crimes in
West Darfur :
It is of vital importance to end impunity in the
Sudan. We hope that this current
development in the
Sudan would be a lesson
to the Sudanese Government
to fulfill all
its obligations to insure justice, security and peace in the country.
