CNPC starts offshore drilling near Sudan

Feb. 2, 2010 (China Knowledge) - China National Petroleum Corp recently launched the first offshore drilling work in the Red Sea Basin off the coast of Sudan, sources reported today.
Reportedly, the well being drilled is Tokar-1, a prospecting well in District 15, 130 km to the southeast of Port Sudan. CNPC and its partners plan to complete the drilling within six months.
In 2005, China’s CNPC, Malaysia’s Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), Sudan’s Sudapet, Nigeria’s Express Petroleum and Sudan's High-Tech Group signed production sharing contracts with the government of Sudan relating to District 15. The companies together formed the Red Sea Petroleum Operating Co Ltd to do the exploration work.
