Opinion Poll on nominees for South Sudan Government

Vision Center for Public Opinion Studies has organized opinion poll on the chances of nominees for South Sudan Government. The poll has interviewed  the citizens' opinion in Upper Nile State , North and West Bahr lGazal States , Jongli state and Equatorial State  regarding the chances of Silva Kiir , Chairman of SPLM and Dr. Lam Akol , Chairman of SPLM-Democratic Change to win the elections. The centre has interviewed 360 persons , 60 persons from each states and they were chosen randomly .

The question of the opinion poll is : who is going to win the elections and why?

Opinion poll   results

  • 66.6% of the participants said that Silva Kiir will win the elections
  • 30.6% said that Dr. Lam Akol will win the elections
  • 2.8% did not give an answer and expressed dissatisfaction about the situation in the south.

Those who supported Silva Kiir said he will win because :

·          Silva Kiir is SPLM candidate and SPLM wants him to win

·          Silva Kiir is the companion of Dr. Jon Grange

·          Silva Kiir supports southerners unity

·          Silva Kiir will work to achieve South Sudan independence

·          Lam Akol will not work for south Sudan independence and he supports north

Those who supported Lam Akol said he will win because :

·          For democracy and change

·          He is and educated person

·          He will make a difference in people's life and ends corruption

·          will rearrange South Sudan army to include all the tribes .

·          People in Equatorial State    will vote for Lam Akol to end Dinka domination

·          Lam Akol will work to end tribal violence

·          Silva Kiir has failed to rule south Sudan

Public opinion

A.   Upper Nile

66.7% of the sample interviewed said that they will not vote for Silva Kiir and will vote for Lam Akol for freedom and denounced tearing Lam Akol picture by SPLM in Malakal and the arrest of SPLM-DC leaders . Some of the interviewed said that the situation in the South is bad and nobody will vote for Silva Kiir save Dinka Bahr Al Gazal. Some others said if there is democracy and transparency Silva Kiir will not win  the elections.

B. Equatorial State  

50% of the sample interviewed in Juba said that Silva Kiir will win because army and all things under SPLM control. Silva Kiir will be the chairman of GoSS with or without elections. Some other said that Lam Akol will make difference and will end corruption . Some of the interviewed said that they will not vote for a Dinka

 

C. Unity State

About 83.3 % of the interviewed   persons said that Silva Kiir will win the election and will became the president by elections or by force . 16.7 % think that Lam Akol will win the elections and he needs fair and transparent elections to win. Some people think that SPLM will use military and security powers to win the elections.

D. North Bahr AlGazal

             90 % in Awil think that Silva Kiir will win because he is the        companion of Dr. John Garng and he supported by Dinka.   10 % think that Dr. Lam Akol will win because he is an educated man, will end corruption and will organize the army to include all tribes.

            E. West Bahr AlGazal

             56.7 5 of the interviewed sample think that Silva Kiir will win because he is the companion of Dr. John Garnag . Some other think that Lam Akol will not support south Sudan independence and will implement north Sudan policies . Others think that Lam Akol is better for the south and can achieve stability and development . Some other described GoSS as corrupted and has created tribal violence . some other think that SPLM is afraid of Lam Akol and started to arrest his supporters.

              F. Jongli

              80% of the interviewed sample in the state think that Silva Kiir will   win the elections . Some other think that Silva Kiir has achieved nothing for the south but he will win because he is SLPM candidate . Some others think that Lam Akol will win because some officials support him secretly .

            6.6 % of the interviewed sample think that no candidates in the South deserve to be supported .
