CAIRO: The 44 Sudanese prisoners pardoned by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi before Suez Canal inauguration on Aug. 6 remain in Egyptian prisons, Sudanese sources told Youm7 Sunday.

On Aug. 5, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir pardoned 101 Egyptian fishermen detained since April for allegedly trespassing into Sudanese territorial waters without permission, according to ashrooq.net.

In exchange, Sisi pardoned 44 Sudanese detainees who were arrested for attempting to enter Egypt illegally.

Sudanese Newspaper al-Youm al-Tali said that, according to Egyptian sources, the presidential pardon issued for the 44 Sudanese is in progress and that the procedures took a long time as the detainees are in more than one prison, said Youm7 Sunday.

The families of the detained Sudanese are to organize a number of demonstrations Monday in front of state-run newspapers in Khartoum calling for their release.
