Arbitrary arrest of General Trade Union Council members
On Sunday, 21 December 2003, the National Security Agency arrested the following nine members of the General Trade Union Council. Their names are as follows:
1. Mahjoub Ahmed Alzubair
2. Minallah Addalwahab
3. Nasr Mohamed Nasr
4. Sidiq Yahya
5. Hadalrayed Abdalmahi Mohamed Attia (f),
6. Ali Khalifa Mahadi,
7. Mohamed Suliman Mohamed
8. Mohamed Mahmood
9. Akasha Babikr Mohamed
They were arrested at 1.45pm at Mr. Mahjoub Ahmed Alzubair house, in Shambat, Khartoum North, during a peaceful meeting, and were taken to the NSA offices near Farouq cemetery. They were released at 10.30pm and ordered to report back to the NSA offices at 11am on Monday, 22 December 2003 and released on the same day at 6 pm and, for a second time, ordered to report the following day. They were questioned about the activities of the union, only on the first day, and were not questioned on their second day of detention.
SOAT condemns these arbitrary arrests and part-time detentions and urges the Government of Sudan to:
i. Take all necessary measures to ensure the physical and psychological integrity of all the detainees.
ii. Order the immediate release of all the detainees in the absence of valid legal charges, or if legitimate charges exist, bring them before an impartial tribunal and guarantee procedural rights at all times.
iii. Ensure that all detainees have access to legal advice
iv. Guarantee the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of association throughout Sudan in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards.
