Dear all.
Let me first start by showing my great respect to Ustaza Fatima Ahmed for her long history in struggling for women's rights in Sudan and for raising the name of Sudan and Sudanese women struggle when she chaired the International women's union in 1993. Few points I want to raise/comment on till I am able to come back with clearer mind and have enough time. While I share some of the ideas with Ustaza fatima (the Sudanese women's discourse in women's rights whether they are called feminists or nisaeeya), I also do not agree with many of the points mentioned by Ustaza Fatima, for instance implying and also saying that all feminists schools have the same aims and come out with the same results. I can also see the struggle of European women since the 19th century and especially the decade after the world war II and the rights it brought to women within that 60 years or so. If we want to address the issue of feminism in the west we have also to address the issues in which this feminisms have grown and the differences between them, for example is the movement of Black women in USA is similar to other feminists movement in the same continent, of course no, the first looked at back women's rights from the angle of slavery, for this reason it saw itself unable to immediately dissolve itself in the women movement in the continent: is the movement of African women inside Africa similar to that of women in the West? Another issue I want also this post to discuss, is the Sudanese women's movement, is one movement, meaning looking at issues in a very united vision, strategies and tactics? Should it be one? Or could it include different movements and if they are many why can't they work for the best of women together, why there is a high expectation and a desire to include it all in one movement that have one shape or ideology, are we all Sudanese women similar in our sufferings, our vision towards rights or are we different, what are the problems facing women's movement, what is the position of women in their political parties and how arethey communicating with women grass roots there are lots of questions and analysis we need to address, at the same time I would like also to comment on the issue of California and Aids, this issue has been raised in this board before and I read a detailed explanation to it from Prof. Sondra Hale, Author of Gender and Politics in Sudan, but will it be ethical to discuss something raised in other list? And can the discussion be honest, neutral and effective by publishing one point of view and not publishing the other??
