Quote: Sudanese-Canadians and the Future of Sudan Winnipeg Conference 2010 Presented by the Mosaic Institute on behalf of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade This one‐day conference for key representatives of the leadership and membership of the Sudanese diaspora from across Canada is being convened by The Mosaic Institute (www.mosaicinstitute.ca, a Toronto‐based charitable organization that seeks to harness Canada’s ethno cultural diversity to promote peace and development abroad. Sudan is one of the Institute’s areas of geographic focus. This conference is being held with the support and participation of the Sudan Task Force at Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), as well as with the participation of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). It is intended to engage those residents and citizens of Canada who possess first‐hand, expert knowledge of Sudan in an open, multi‐directional discussion about the most pressing humanitarian, economic and political issues facing Sudan, and the challenges and opportunities facing Canada as a major contributor of aid and other forms of assistance to the people of Sudan. The content of this conference is inspired in part by the findings of a report on the distribution, organization and foreign policy priorities of the Sudanese diaspora in Canada that was prepared by the Mosaic Institute in 2009, entitled “Profile of a Community: A ‘Smart Map’ of the Sudanese Diaspora in Canada”. The content has been further inspired by subsequent, ongoing and anticipated events in Sudan that do or could bear directly upon Canada’s interests as a major provider of humanitarian aid, development assistance, and military protection for the civilians of Southern Sudan and Darfur, in particular. This event will provide an important opportunity for Canadian government officials and Sudanese‐Canadian “citizen experts” to discuss issues that are of crucial importance both to the people of Sudan and to the government and people of Canada. The conference will be held in Convocation Hall at the University of Winnipeg on Thursday, September 2, 2010, from 8:00am until 5:15pm. Appropriate arrangements will be made for those observing Ramadan, including the provision of a separate room for prayers. We are looking forward to having you join us as a “citizen expert” of your community and an honoured guest of the Mosaic Institute. Sincerely, The Mosaic Institute Toronto, Ontario |
