In the late 1990s, the late Dr. John Garang De Mabior went to Twic area of northern Gogria, my native area, to meet with the chiefs and the elders. The Twic County borders Abyie and was devastated by Murahleen raids, government forces incursions plus the government backed malitia were rigging havoc on civilians. The villagers wanted weapons to arm themselves so that they could protect themselves. Garang said no and said to them:'You all want weapons for retaliatory purposes, all half of Misseria are sons and daughters of our sisters. We in the Dinka tradition, you can break ties with your cousins and uncles from your father's side but never break ties with your sister's sons and daughters." My translation from the Dinka.
The late Garang new one thing about Dinka and Nuer and almost all Southern tribes. Be honest with people and you get respect. He knew the New Sudan vision was undigestable in most parts of the South but he got the respect of his people and admiration from SPLA ranks and files. It was a mere power of ideas.
Is there anyone in the North, in the traditional power triangle, NIF, UMA, UDP, who can step into the plate and say: Sudan first, religion second. Is there any hope?
