Summary of Events
 
The UN General Assembly is considering a non-binding resolution to condemn the human rights abuses committed by the Assad regime. The UN High Commissioner on Human Rights, Navi Pillay, noted that “the gross, widespread and systematic human rights violations have not only continued, but also sharply escalated”.
 
The military campaign continued in the provinces of Homs and Idlib today, as neighbourhoods of Homs, especially Baba Amr, suffered random shelling and bombardment as the regime was unable to gain access to the city. Meanwhile, the regime invaded the city of Palmyra in the province of Homs and occupied dozens of houses to use as frontier bases to launch sweeping arbitrary arrest campaigns. The regime isolated many neighbourhoods of the city amidst heavy shelling and machinegun fire, while electricity and all communications were cut off.
 
Assad’s forces killed at least 43 today; most fell in Homs and Idlib. The regime brought in additional reinforcements to Jesr al-Shoghour consisting of more than seventy tanks. Meanwhile, demonstrations continued despite the ongoing crackdown.
 
Australia and Switzerland expanded the list of Syrian institutions and individuals subject to economic sanctions.
