UN HUMANITARIAN COORDINATOR IN SUDAN SEES POSITIVE START TO DIALOGUE WITH NEW STATE GOVERNMENT IN SOUTH DARFUR



(Nyala/Khartoum, 21 June 2010) � Resident Humanitarian Coordinator Mr. Georg Charpentier on 20 June co-chaired with the South Darfur State Wali, H.E. Abdulhameed Musa Kasha a round-table discussion on strengthening State Joint Mechanisms in Nyala, South Darfur.  

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the newly elected state government officials and the humanitarian community in South Darfur through the State Joint Committee and sub-committees on programmes, procedures and safety and security.

�This meeting was a positive starting point for improved dialogue and cooperation on issues and challenges for the humanitarian community. I am pleased with the commitment expressed by the South Darfur state authorities in terms of working together on the implementation of these mechanisms,� said Mr. Charpentier.

The State Joint Mechanisms will be responsible for monitoring the efficiency of the humanitarian aid system in South Darfur in terms of addressed needs, the quality of programmes, performance and possible gaps in the response. The Mechanisms will also monitor and establish the conditions for a safe, secure and predictable operating environment for humanitarian agencies and review policies and procedures relevant to humanitarian aid and early recovery.

The State Joint Mechanism falls within the framework of the Joint Communiqu�s 2004 and 2007 as well as Decree no.3 of 16 April 2009 on strengthening the humanitarian situation in Darfur and Decree no.4 of 2 May 2009 on strengthening the terms of reference of the High Level Committee and the establishment of the State Joint Committee.
