US Denies Holding Meetings In Juba To Change Sudanese State's Structure

KHARTOUM, Feb 16 (BERNAMA-NNN-SUNA) -- The United States Embassy in Khartoum has refuted reports that the US Consul in Juba has held a meeting with the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), which controls the Government of South Sudan (GoSS), and Northern leaders to discuss a strategy for changing the structure of the Sudanese State.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Khalid Musa said here Tuesday that the US Embassy here, in a statement to the foreign ministry, had affirmed Washington's commitment to its pledges towards Sudan and implementation of understandings reached between officials of the two countries on the importance of maintaining the security and peace in North and South Sudan and to solve pending issues, especially that the US Administration begins procedures for removing Sudan from the list of countries it considers to be sponsoring terrorism.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had on Monday sought clarification from the US regarding statements attributed to the US Consul in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, during his meeting with leading figures of the SPLM and northern political leaders who have links with the SPLM.

In a press statement issued here Monday, spokesman Khalid Musa said the statements attributed to the US Consul were "strange and inconsistent with the spirit and requirements of the ongoing political dialogue between Khartoum and Washington".

Explaining that the statement were unlike statements given by any American official at the highest levels, Musa said that Sudan would adopt a suitable stance after it received the official response from the US in this respect.

He indicated that the said meeting in Juba disclosed serious details of the American strategy concerning northern Sudan issues and use of the SPLM and opposition forces for changing the structure of the Sudanese state.
