UN: Donors Fulfilled 50% of their Pledges to Support the Referendum

Khartoum, Nov. 1 (SUNA)- Chairman of the Elections Department at the United Nations, Dennis Kadima, said that the donors have provided 63 million dollars, which represent 50% of their pledges to support the referendum of south Sudan

At a press conference he held Monday at the UN head office in Khartoum, Kadima said that the UN is optimistic that the referendum would be held in the fixed time, referring to the keenness and commitment of the two partners of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in this regard

He expressed his worry that weakness of the infrastructures and absence of asphalted roads would have negative impact on the distribution of the technical materials needed within the three-week period set for conducting the referendum

He said that helicopter planes would be used to convey the materials and technical items of the referendum to some areas due to the short time remained for holding the referendum

Kadima indicated that the police forces in the north and the south will assume the role of providing referendum materials to the voting centers, adding that the UN has given training for 14,000 policemen in south in this connection during the period from last May till October

He added that centers for voting in the referendum would be set in a number of countries including the United States, Australia, Britain, Canada, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Egypt
