Turkish doctors have been working to heal Sudanese patients at a hospital built by Turkish Red Crescent in southern Sudan.

Doctors are in Nyala, the capital of Darfur state, since 2006 as part of an aid project carried out by Turkish Red Crescent and Turkish Ministry of Health.

Turkish volunteer doctors have been working in Sudan on a two-month rotating basis. They are examining patients at all ages, performing surgeries and treating almost all kind of diseases at the Turkish hospital.

"We have several clinics here such as pediatrics, gynaecology, general surgery and dental clinics. We also give free medicine to patients," said Hasan Yagci, an official of Turkish Red Crescent in Sudan.

Turkey has recently sent medical equipments to be used in cataract surgeries as cataract is a widespread disease in the country. Turkish doctors will train local oculists who will perform cataract surgeries, Yagci said.

Most of the patients of the hospital are from nearby refugee camps who are really poor people, said head doctor Ahmet Sumbul.

"We are helping people who can hardly pay even for a very simple medicine. I do not even mention surgery costs. Turkish Ministry of Health and Red Crescent organization are doing a very great job here in Sudan," Sumbul said.
