Sudan and World Bank Affirm their Keenness to Cooperate on Issues of Development and General Debt
Khartoum, Sept. 1 (SUNA)- The Minister of Finance, Ali Mahmoud, said that Sudan will go ahead implementing its strategy for combating poverty, building capacities and community building in a manner that leads to enhancement of the economic performance and a sound Sudan economically and socially
At a joint press conference he held Wednesday with the visiting Vice - President of the World Bank for Africa Region, Mrs. Obiageli Katryn Ezekwesili, the Minister of Finance said that the talks between them tackled the issues of foreign debt and the technical conditions required from Sudan so as receive technical assistance for reducing the foreign indebtedness
He called on the World Bank to provide Sudan with the required assistance and plans in the context of the open economic relation with Sudan, affirming Sudan readiness to respond and cooperate for the benefit of the national economy
The minister referred to the ongoing talks between the National Congress and Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) concerning the issues of general debt, the currency and the borders, adding that the goal of the state is the debt's writing off debts whether Sudan remained united or separated
The Minister of Finance described the current visit of the Vice - President of the World Bank for Africa Region as unprecedented
Meanwhile, the Vice - President of the World Bank for Africa Region said that Sudan is an important country in the African economic map, indicating Sudan's economic stability is helpful to the stability in all the African nations
Mrs. Ezekwesili explained that the objective of her visit is to be informed about the progress of Sudan economy and its development policies, means of enhancing the people's standard of living, the contribution of the private sector and the civil communities to the combating of poverty and improving the living conditions
She said that the HIPC programme stipulates the state's adoption of particular conditions and programmes for reducing or writing off the general debt, such as the economic and tax reform and formulation of financial policies that are supporting to the poor and alleviating to poverty, expressing her confidence on Sudan adoption to the economic and social procedure toward the cancellation of debts
Mrs. Ezekwesili pointed out that the World Bank will cooperate with Sudan and will help it regardless of the result of the referendum
She called for diversification of the economy by attraction of investments and utilization of Sudan resources rather than concentration on oil
