Sudan Elected Deputy Chairman of Intergevenmtal Panel on Climate Change
Khartoum, Oct. 13 (SUNA) - Sudan was unanimously elected as the Deputy Chairman of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in the person of Dr. Ismail Abdul-Rahim Al-Gizouli, a Consultant on Climatic Change at the Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources
SUNA learnt that Dr. Al-Gizouli was assuming the position of the Acting Deputy Chairman of the IPCC till the holding of its general assembly, currently in session, in Posan of Korea
Sudan high-level specialized delegation to the conference supported the nomination of Mr. Al-Gizouli
The 21-year old IPCC, which includes 160 member states, is the leading body for the assessment of climate change, established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to provide the world with a clear scientific view on the current state of climate change and its potential environmental and socio-economic consequences
The initial task for the IPCC as outlined in the UN General Assembly Resolution 43/53 of 6 December 1988 was to prepare a comprehensive review and recommendations with respect to the state of knowledge of the science of climate change; social and economic impact of climate change, possible response to strategies and elements for inclusion in a possible future international convention on climate
The IPCC is a key scientific reference to the International Convention on the Climatic Change as well as the Kotono Convention
