State Minister for Foreign Affairs Affirms Importance of IGAD Summit in Addis Ababa

 

Addis Ababa, November 22 (SUNA)- The State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kamal Hassan Ali, has underscored importance of the summit meeting of the IGAD due be held Tuesday in Addis Ababa following the Ministerial Meeting which was held Monday in the Ethiopian capital

 

In a statement to SUNA, Ali said that the importance of the IGAD meeting emanates from the topic that it will discuss, which is Abyei issue, and the fact that the IGAD member states, that include Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti have contributed to the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) which is now in the final stages of its implementation

 

The minister said that the importance of the IGAD meeting of Tuesday are emanate from the fact that outcome of the coming referendum of south Sudan will have direct impact on the IGAD member states, therefore these countries have given much concern to the issues of Sudan

 

Meanwhile, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs indicated that the IGAD experts' meeting has reviewed a report on the situation in Sudan which was presented by representatives of Sudan government and Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). Ali said that the African Union, represented in its high-level Panel on Sudan, gave a briefing on the situation in Sudan, adding that the discussion that followed the presentation of this briefing have underscored the importance of durable and comprehensive peace in Sudan, regardless of the result of the referendum

 

He pointed out that the experts were informed in full about the discussions and agreements reached by the two partners about the post referendum issues through the framework agreement, excluding Abyei issue, pointing to the proposals forwarded by the two partners to AU Panel on Sudan which is headed by Thabo Mbeki for reaching a solution and including them in the framework agreement

 

The State Minister for Foreign Affairs indicated that the ministerial meeting of the IGAD affirmed the importance of refrain of all parties from any non peaceful means for solving issues
