A 27-year-old Ottawa man with a string of convictions for violent offences including robbery and assault has been sent back to Sudan after being declared a danger to the Canadian public.

Achuil Achuil Lual was removed from Canada on Sept. 27 after spending nearly 10 months in jail on an immigration hold following the completion of his latest sentence in November for obstructing a police officer.

Since arriving in Canada in 1994, Lual amassed convictions for multiple crimes, including uttering threats, robbery, assault and resisting arrest, according to the Canada Border Services Agency.

Lual was declared a danger to the public under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act in June 2008; however, he had to serve his outstanding sentences and deal with ongoing charges before the removal process could begin, said CBSA spokesman Chris Kealey.

"If you have substantial criminality, you have determined your own fate," said Kealey.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews and Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney commended the Canada Border Services Agency for Lual's removal.

"The removal of violent foreign offenders is key to maintaining the integrity of Canada's immigration system and protecting Canadians," said Kenney.
