The demobilisation of adult combatants under the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) programme in Sudan kicks off on 10 February 2009 in Ed Damazin, Blue Nile State , with 50 combatants per day. About 5,000 combatants from the North-South War, which ended with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005, will be demobilised in Blue Nile State alone over a period of one year. Over all, the target figure in the DDR programme is 180,000 combatants. Under the multi-year scheme, they would be disarmed, demobilised and progressively reintegrated into civilian life. The programme is led jointly by the Sudanese DDR Commissions in North and South, with the United Nations providing financial and technical support.

The launching ceremony in Ed Damazin would be attended by senior Government officials and diplomatic representatives.
