United Nations Appreciates Elections in Sudan

 

Khartoum, April 21 (SUNA) - The National Elections Commission Wednesday held a joint meeting with the delegation of the UN mission in Sudan, which was headed by the Special envoy of the UN Secretary General to Sudan, Haile Menkerios, before his departure to the United States to deliver the initial report of the UN mission on the elections in Sudan to the UN Secretary General

 

In a press statement after the meeting, the UN official expressed his satisfaction over the election process in Sudan in general, which was held in an extremely complicated conditions, which were represented in emergence of Sudan from a longstanding war, weakness of the infrastructures in many of the Sudanese states and the various executive and legislative levels in the elections, a matter that affirms acceptance of these elections taking into consideration the mentioned facts

 

Menkerios said that these elections represent a landmark event in Sudan history and major step for realizing democratic transformation in the country. Meanwhile, he disclosed that the initial reading of the reports issued by the international monitoring organizations on the elections in Sudan were positive. He appreciated the effective participation of people in the voting process , especially after a number of parties declared their boycott to the elections. He said that the participation of voters was voluntary, stating that the rate of the technical mistakes was very little and did not affect the election process
