Undersecretary of Foreign Ministry Acquaints US Senate delegation with Situation in Sudan
Khartoum, Feb. 18 (SUNA)- The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Muttrif, Siddiq, Thursday received the visiting US Senate delegation, headed by Senator Richard Durbin, and acquainted them with the situation in Sudan, the ongoing efforts to reach a solution for Darfur issue and the peace process in Sudan
In a press statement, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Muawiya Osman Khalid, said that the government has called on the United States to exert more efforts for realization of peace in Sudan and helping the parties implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA)
He said that the government has expressed its thanks for the continuous American assistance in the humanitarian aspects especially that the United States is providing a major boost to the humanitarian repatriation programmes
Khalid said that Sudan is needy for the support of the United States and the international community in this respect toward implementing development programmes which are important for realizing stability and peace
He said that the American delegation expressed clear concern with the election process and the aspects relating to it, adding that the Senate delegation also appreciated the developments in Darfur, especially at the security field. He hoped that the progress of the Sudanese - American relations will go ahead
Meanwhile, head of the Senate delegation described the meeting as fruitful and positive and tackled the developments in Sudan, adding that his country is continuing to support Sudan
He said that Darfur issue is given concern by the United States and the world. He indicated that the meeting reviewed the future of Darfur, referring to the big decrease in the level of violence
Head of the US Senate delegation said that he is looking forward for strong relations between Sudan and the United States as well as restoration of security and stability in the region. MO/MO
