UNAMID Affirms its Readiness to Boost Implementation of any Agreement to be Reached through Doha Negotiations

 

Al-Fasher, Jan. 21 (SUNA)- The joint UN and African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has affirmed its readiness to boost implementation of any agreement that would be reached through the coming negotiations in Doha between the government and the armed movements in Darfur, scheduled to begin in the coming days. The UNAMID stressed the importance of the signing of an agreement on cessation of hostilities so that the negotiations can be held in a calm atmosphere. Interviewed by SUNA at the headquarters of UNAMID mission in Al-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, the spokesman of UNAMID, Nour-Eddine Al-Mazni, said that the mission is supporting the efforts being exerted by the joint UN - African Union Mediation for making a success the negotiations in Doha. He stressed that there can never be a military solution for Darfur issue, calling for peaceful solution of Darfur issue so that peace and stability can return to Darfur region. Al-Mazni said that the situation of no war - no peace would increase the suffering of the people of Darfur, calling on the parties in Darfur issue to sign a comprehensive and lasting peace agreement. He said that the rate of the deployment of UNAMID forces in Darfur has reached 78.36%, with a total number of 15,376 soldiers, in addition to the police component which is operating at the displaced people camps round-the-clock. He said that expected arrival of five Ethiopian planes will support the quick field work of UNAMID forces. Al-Mazni said that the joint UN and African Union mission is preparing to receive its new head, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, who is prominent personality in the fields of diplomacy and international relations and worked as the Foreign Minister of Nigeria and assumed several UN positions, including the Advisor of the UN Secretary General for African Affairs.
