Thabo Mbeki Appreciates Displaced People Participation in the Elections

 

Al-Fasher, April 14 (SUNA) - Chairman of the African Union's Panel on Darfur and former South Africa president, Thabo Mbeki, said that the democratic transformation, currently witnessed in Sudan through the general elections, would have positive impact on the whole peace process in Sudan and would lead to comprehensive peace in Darfur

 

In a press statement at Al-Fasher Airport Wednesday after his visit to North Darfur State, Mbeki said that Darfur shall be part of the democratic transformation which is taking place in Sudan

 

He asserted the important role of the civil society organizations in the coming peace process in Sudan

 

Thabo Mbeki has visited Abu-Shoak and Al-Salam displaced people camps near Al-Fasher, accompanied by the special representative of the UN and African Union for Darfur, Ibrahim Gambari, where they inspected the voting process at the camps

 

Mbeki said that he observed the big rush of the displaced people to the polling centers to cast their votes, appreciating the atmosphere and the stability which enabled the displaced people to vote in the elections

 

Meanwhile, the special representative of the UN and the African Union for Darfur, Ibrahim Gambari, briefed Mbeki on the political and security situation in Darfur and exchanged views on the Sudanese elections
