Sudanese Minister: Qatar Plays Important Role In Solving The Darfur Conflict

DOHA, April 5 (Bernama) -- Sudanese Minister of Information and Communications Zahawi Ibrahim Malik, who is also spokesman for the Sudanese government, has praised efforts undertaken by Qatar to resolve the Darfur conflict, Qatar News Agency (QNA)reported.

He stressed that Qatar under the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has been playing a very essential and important role in resolving the issue.

The Minister underlined that Qatar did not have its own agenda in solving the conflict, adding that Qatar's endeavour stemmed from its noble position to help in resolving urgent Arab issues, including the Darfur conflict.

He highlighted in an interview with the Al Sharq newspaper published on Monday what has been achieved with regards to realising peace in Darfur including the framework agreements between the governments and the Justice and Equality, Liberation and Justice Movements, deeming these achievements as very important but need more efforts to be spared so that a final solution can be reached.

Malik also lauded Qatar's announcement to establish a US$2 billion Qatari bank for the development of Darfur, considering that part of the final solution to this case was presented by the Arab and Islamic countries at a meeting in Cairo when they allocated US$850 million.

He added: "It is true that this portion does not solve the issue completely but when added to the money assigned by Qatar to set up a bank it will inevitably push the development process in the region."
