Security Council Welcomes Framework Agreement and Regards it as Positive Development for Reaching Peace in Darfur

 

New York, Feb. 25 (SUNA) - The Security Council has welcomed the framework agreement which was signed between the government and the Justice and Equality Movement and regarded it as a positive and important progress for reaching permanent peace in Darfur

 

A statement of the Security Council, read over by the Ambassador of France and current chairman of the Security Council Thursday described the framework agreement as a positive development, and called on the other armed movements to join the peace process

 

The statement has praised the roles of the Chadian and Qatari leaderships and the efforts of the Joint Mediator of the UN and the African Union

 

Meanwhile, the Ambassadors of the Group of Islamic Countries in New York issued a statement welcoming the framework agreement after they were briefed by Sudan Ambassador, Abdul-Mahmoud Abdul-Halim, on the agreement

 

The statement appreciated the agreement signed in Doha and considered it an accomplishment for Sudan and the peace-loving countries all over the world

 

The group congratulated the Sudanese leadership and people on the historic event, affirming the group's full support and solidarity with Sudan along the peace for realizing peace, stability and development

 

The African group in New York also appreciated the framework and regarded it as accomplishment for the whole African continent

 

In a press statement to SUNA, Sudan Ambassador Abdul-Mahmoud Abdul-Halim, said that the framework agreement, which was signed by the government and the Justice and Equality Movement, was met with unprecedented welcome from the international and regional organizations, a matter which will boost the credibility of this important and historic progress

 

He added that the signing of the agreement was greatly appreciated by the international community in New York
