Over 100,000 Policemen stand ready for securing the election process

 

Khartoum, April 7 (SUNA) - The Police on Wednesday stressed their readiness to protect the election process, deploying more than 100,000 policemen to ensure safe conduct of the elections, counting and the public announcement of the result in some 14 Northern states

 

Head of the Criminal Department at the Khartoum State police force, and the Spokesman of the Committee assigned to secure the elections, Major-General Mohammed Ahmed Ali, briefed a press conference on Wednesday on the plans set to ensure the safe conduct of the elections

 

Maj. General Ali referred to the allocation of special unit to receive reports and rumors besides the current police emergency chamber at the Headquarters of Khartoum State Police besides special chamber to receive information on the elections by dialing 999

 

He added that the plan included protection of dignitaries and candidates in addition to the hotels and the protection of foreign-observer missions as well securing the ballot centers during the announcement of voting results

 

He revealed the creation of a major emergency chamber to meet the requirements of the plan and to boost coordination with relevant agencies, explaining that the plan has divided the capital into three areas: Khartoum, Khartoum North and Omdurman, saying that each area is under the supervision of a Major General in addition to the presence of an officer who is to supervise each constituency but who would not interfere in any way in the electoral process affirming the wide and heavy presence of police which might not be visible to citizens

 

Maj. General Ali urged people to play a positive role and refrain from spreading of rumors during the electoral process, saying the police forces received a special training that made them well-trained and informed about the electoral

 

He said the training was conducted during that past couple of months. He commended the United Nations Mission in Sudan and the Turkey that have contributed in the training of police forces

 

Major General Ali affirmed that the regular police activities are not affected by the elections procedures, explaining that police has recently placed into custody more than 700 customary offenders

 

The Spokesman of the Committee assigned to secure the elections, Major-General Mohammed Ahmed Ali, affirmed the stability of security situation in Darfur, especially after the signing of the recent agreements, except for some unruly groups, noting that the police have secured all the constituencies in Darfur with the assistance of other security forces

 

In response to a reporter's question about the coordination with police in the south to protect the election process, Maj. General Ali said that the police forces in the North have been cooperated with the police of the South with regard to the elections arrangements, explaining that securing elections in the South is the responsibility of police forces in Southern Sudan
