Gunmen kill 2 peacekeepers in Sudan's south Darfur

CAIRO The U.N.-African Union peacekeeping mission says gunmen have killed two Egyptian peacekeepers in an ambush in south Darfur.

UNAMID says in a statement that the attack on the three-vehicle convoy took place Friday near Katila village, some 50 miles (85 kilometers) south of Edd al Fursan. It also says three peacekeepers were wounded in the ambush. They were airlifted to a UNAMID hospital and are in stable condition.

The attack bring to 24 the number of peacekeepers killed since the UN-AU force deployed in January 2008 to protect civilians and improve security in Darfur.

Fighting between rebels and Sudanese government forces began there in 2003, killing up to 300,000 people and driving 2.7 million from their homes. The government says those figures are exaggerated.
