European Union Regards Sudanese Elections as Important Step in Implementing CPA
Brussels, April 19 (SUNA)- The European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, said that the elections in Sudan represent a landmark step for implementing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA)
In a press statement Monday, she expressed her hope that these elections will lead to political environment characterized by more openness and pluralism under the coming important challenges
She appreciated the atmosphere of extensive peaceful work that prevailed during the elections' period
The EU official said that the European Union has sent a big mission to monitor the elections in Sudan during April 11 - 15
She said that described the elections in Sudan as complicated, adding that she has followed up with concern the shortcomings that were spotted by the European Union mission and other missions
She stressed the importance of surpassing shortcomings, especially with regard to the coming steps in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), including the referendum in south Sudan which is scheduled to be conducted in January 2010
She called for increasing efforts to reach a permanent and comprehensive political solution for Darfur issue
