Egypt police kill Sudanese migrant near Israel border

EL-ARISH, Egypt Egyptian police shot and killed a Sudanese migrant on Sunday as he attempted to cross the border illegally into neighbouring Israel, a security official said.

Adam Ali Mohammed, 39, died of his wounds at hospital in the north Sinai town of El-Arish after three bullets struck him in the stomach and chest, the official said on condition of anonymity.

"Police had ordered the man to stop, but when he didn't, they were forced to shoot," the official said.

Mohammed's death brings to 17 the number of African migrants killed when attempting the crossing in search of a better life and job prospects in Israel.

Cairo has rejected constant criticism from human rights groups of its policy of using potentially lethal force against the migrants trying to enter illegally into the Jewish state.

According to security services in Egypt, which has a 1979 peace treaty with Israel, 19 migrants were killed last year. Most of the migrants hail from Eritrea, Sudan and Ethiopia.
