Dr. Ismail meets Obasanjo, Discuss Sudanese-Nigerian Relations

 

Khartoum, May 26 (SUNA) - Chairman of the External Relations' Sector at the National Congress (NC), Dr. Mustafa Osman Ismail, received at his office Wednesday the former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, who arrived in Khartoum to take part in the celebrations marking inauguration of Field Marshal Omer Al-Bashir as the President of the Republic for anew presidential term on Thursday

 

The meeting discussed the situation in the region and the relations between the two countries and means of consolidating them, besides ways to boost the cooperation between Sudan and Nigeria. Dr. Ismail and Obasanjo also reviewed the situation in Darfur and the relations between the ruling party in Nigeria and the National Congress

 

Dr. Ismail affirmed the important role of Nigeria in supporting the security in the Great Lakes Region

 

Meanwhile, Dr. Ismail met at the headquarters of the National Congress with Chairman of the UNAMID of Darfur, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, who will represent the UN Secretary General in the inauguration of President Al-Bashir

 

The meeting reviewed outcome of the recent meeting of the African Union's Council of Peace and Security which deliberated about peace in Sudan

 

The NC External Relations' Secretary said that comprehensive discussion was conducted on the preparations and plans of the United Nations for supporting the National Congress and Sudan People's Liberation Movement to implement the coming phase of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), besides the prepartations and arrangements for the referendum and post- referendum and ways to implement them

 

Dr. Ismail said that he told the UN official that the two partners to CPA are now conducting discussions and they are realizing a breakthrough on the issue of the formation the Referendum Commission as well as the arrangements of post-referendum

 

He said, in statement after the meeting that he briefed the envoy of UN Secretary General on the developments in Sudan with concentration on the plans and prorgammes after the President's inauguration and the government formation
