Canadian Foreign Minister Issues Statement on Elections in Sudan and Appreciates Adherence of Sudanese People to Democracy
Ottawa, April 21 (SUNA) - The Canadian Foreign Minister, Lawrence Cannon, has issued a statement in which he praised adherence of the Sudanese people to democracy
He said that millions of the Sudanese people have expressed their desire for democratic transformation and a better future
He indicated the despite the fact that the elections were held calmly and peacefully, but Canada expresses its concern over the defects that encountered the elections process
The Canadian Foreign Minister affirmed his country's support to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), stating that these elections were one of the most important components of the peace agreement
He said it is important that Sudan shall implement the remaining items of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in a transparent way, including the referendum
Cannon called on the parties of the conflict in Darfur to double their efforts to make a success the peace process through the negotiations in Doha and to reach a peace agreement in Darfur
He asserted the support of Canada to the comprehensive peace in Sudan, explaining that his country has contributed 760 million dollars for boosting the peace process in Sudan since the year 2006
He added that Canada will continue to prop up the peace and the referendum in Sudan
