Britain Pledges to Provide 200 Million Sterling Pounds for Peace, Services and the Elections in Sudan

 

Khartoum, Jan. 9 (SUNA) - The Embassy of Britain to Sudan announced that Britain will contribute this year a sum of more than 200 million sterling pounds in the support of the peace-keeping, relief and basic services in Sudan. In a statement it issued Saturday, the British Embassy said that Britain is committed to provide this week 54 million sterling pounds as humanitarian support for different parts in Sudan, boosting peace in the south and the preparations for the elections. Meanwhile, the statement indicated that the British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, called, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary for the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), for increasing of efforts toward guaranteeing a peaceful future for all the Sudanese people. According to the Embassy's statement, the British Prime Minister has appreciated the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), indicating that Gordon Brown said that the two signatory parties of the agreement have accomplished much in the past five years, but he added that more efforts shall be done. The statement quoted Brown as saying that the leaders in Sudan shall live to the level of the remaining challenges to transfer the agreement into a permanent peace for all the Sudanese people and all the regions of Sudan, including Darfur. The Embassy's statement stated that the United Kingdom is proud over its role as a sponsor of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in the year 2005. MO/MO
