14th African Union Summit begins in Addis Ababa and Underscores Achievement of Progress in Darfur

 

Addis Ababa, Jan. 31 (SUNA) - The 14th session of the African Union Summit was inaugurated Sunday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa with participation of the President of the Republic, Field Marshal Omer Al-Bashir

 

The African Union Commissioner, Jean Ping, presented a report at the summit on the commission's activities in the past year, including the developments and accomplishment reached indifferent aspects, such as security, peace , protection for the refugees, the globalization, energy, food security, agriculture, women and the relation between African and the international community

 

Ping called for speeding up of the integration between the African countries and reviewed the plan of the African Union's Commission for the period 2009 - 2012 in the fields of peace and security, referring to the efforts exerted for solving a number of disputes in some African states

 

He referred to the progress achieved in Darfur issue, indicating that the report worked out by the African panel on Darfur, which is headed by Thabo Mbeki, has underscored the importance of comprehensive negotiation and reaching a political solution

 

Ping also referred to the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), explaining that progress was achieved in this regard

 

He said that the African Union Commission will continue to help the different parties in Sudan surpass all the pending and future difficulties, referring to the elections which will be held in Sudan in next April

 

He also pointed to the referendum that will be held in Sudan after a year, stressing the importance of reaching a peaceful solution for Darfur issue and support to the role of the United Nations and the African Union in this respect

 

The Libyan Leader and chairman of the past African Union's session Muammar Al-Qaddafi, underscored the importance of a united African stance in the international forums and before the super countries and the international organizations
