Are there any Side Effects from the Painful Surgery within the SPLA?

By:Deng Mulwal

A very touchy and complicated surgery in which a sharp lancet was used is that what GoSS President Salva Kiir conducted over the body of the SPLA recently. According to statistics, the number of the SPLA elements exceeds 100 thousand spread everywhere in the South, in the streets, markets, urban and rural areas and even inside the residential areas.

The surgery that Lt. Gen. Salva Kiir started recently came after the increasingly restlessness and grumbling of the chieftains from the violations of the SPLA elements, the spread of arms and the unjustifiable confrontations between the SPLA and the citizens.

Added to that the remarks of President Al Bashir in his address to NCP consultation council in which he called on GoSS to curb the SPLA and bringing its elements to their barracks and garrisons after the latter became a direct threat targeting the citizens freedoms and their normal life and movements

According to news reports the removal of most of the high rank commanders and replacing them by others is but an attempt from 1st. Lt. Gen. Salva Kiir to build a strong and disciplined army after the disrepute of the SPLA and its failure to stop LRA attacks.

Observers recognize that the reshuffle within the SPLA represented a kind of tribal balance to reduce the conflicts amongst the leaderships who use the army to escalate tribal tensions.

The wide reshuffle within the SPLA raises the fears of the side effects of this painful surgery as those who were removed will not remain a mere bystanders a matter which 1st Lt. Gen Salva Kiir should consider.
