Isa Ali Hassaballah (m), aged 44, SLA member

Isa Ali Hassaballah, a member of the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA), was released on or about 8 June 2006, after 17 days in detention. He was in poor condition after he reportedly had been beaten for four hours and tied up in the sun while in detention. After his release he had to walk 75 km from Muzbat, where he had been held, to his home in Bir Maza.

Suleiman Jamous, a former SLA humanitarian coordinator, was released to the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) from Muzbat on 22 June 2006. He was taken to Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, where he now remains under UN protection. UN human rights monitors were allowed to visit him on 14 June 2006.

Suleiman Jamous and Isa Ali Hassaballah were arrested on 20 and 22 May 2006 respectively by members of an SLA faction, led by Mini Arcou Minawi, which supports the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA).
