PRESS RELEASE

UN and Sudan Sign UN Development Assistance Framework for 2009-2012

DSRSG/HC/RC Ms Ameerah Haq and H.E. Dr. Elias Nyamlell Wakoson, Minister of International Cooperation sign UNDAF document

Khartoum 23 July 2008 The United Nations system in Sudan, together with the Government of National Unity and the Government of Southern Sudan today signed the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), ushering in a new programming cycle for the UN system for the next four years from 2009 to 2012. The signing ceremony took place on Wednesday 23 July at the Ministry of International Cooperation in Khartoum, and was attended by Government officials, United Nations representatives, and development partners. The UNDAF is the common strategic framework for the activities and collaborative efforts of the UN system at the country level. As such it provides a collective, coherent and integrated UN response to national priorities and needs taking into account the Millennium Development Goals, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, Eastern Sudan Peace Agreement, the Joint Assessment Mission report, the Five-Year Strategic Plan 2007-2011 of the Government of National Unity, and the Government of Southern Sudan Budget Sector Plans and other relevant documents.

This is the second time the UN is preparing an UNDAF for Sudan which embraces government priorities and meets the objectives of the UN reform process that began in 1997, aimed at enhancing programme collaboration and coherence among UN agencies as well as between the UN and development partners. The first UNDAF 2002-2006 was extended for two additional years until 2008 to enable the UN family and national counterparts to prepare a strategic response to the emerging priorities created by the signing of the CPA and on-going peace processes.

The Assistance Framework includes funds, programmes, specialized and non-resident UN agencies. It is implemented in close cooperation with national partners, other international development partners and civil society organizations.
