AMIS Acting Head of Mission meets Ministry of Foreign Affairs Officials on abduction incidents in El Fasher

Today, the Acting Head of the African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS), Madam Monique Mukaruliza met with officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This meeting took place at her instance in the context of the on-going efforts to secure the release of AMIS military personnel and a vehicle hijacked on 10 December, 2006 in El Fasher by unidentified armed men.

The Acting Head of Mission told the Government officials that AMIS is very concerned over the issue and requested the Government in whose jurisdiction the incident took place to step up the on-going search for the AMIS military personnel. She reiterated that AMIS will continue to cooperate with the concerned authorities to ensure a well coordinated operation.

On their behalf, the Government Representatives assured Madam Mukaruliza that they will do everything possible to ensure a positive outcome and agreed with her that the incident was extremely unfortunate since AMIS troops are in Darfur to help in restoring peace and stability and not to be part of the conflict.
