Wheat-Cultivated Area in Current Winter Season Exceeds One Million Feddans

 

Khartoum, Oct. 31 (SUNA)- The State Minister at the Ministry of Agriculture, Engineer Abdul-Rahim Ali Hamad, announced the wheat-cultivated areas in the current winter season are 1.142 million feddans all over Sudan states. He said at the regular news forum of Sudan News Agency (SUNA) that the total area cultivated with different crops in the winter season reaches 1.670 million feddans, with an increase of 43% than that in the past year. Engineer Hamad said that the wheat productivity in the current season would reach 1.16 tons per the one feddan. He said that the required production inputs were provided, such as gasoline, fertilizers and improved seeds were provided. The minister stated that success of the current winter agricultural season is closely linked to the provision of funding and agricultural insurance. He indicated that the policy of the Ministry of Agriculture is giving a special concern to the rehabilitation schemes, construction of water pumps, support to the agricultural research, agricultural extension, use of technology and reducing the production cost by 30%. He said that the state aims to achieve self-sufficiency in wheat production by advent of the year 2011. MO/MO
