UNAMID observes International Day of Peace in El-Fashir

 

El-Fashir, Sept. 21 (SUNA) - The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) observed the International Day of Peace at the State Legislative Council Hall in El Fashir, capital of North Darfur State, in presence of the Wali (Governor) of the State, Osman Mohammed Yusof Kibir, Acting Speaker of the Legislative Council of the State Yusof Mahmoud El-Tayeb, many leaders of the State, government officials, civil society organizations and students of secondary schools. Addressing the occasion, the Wali of the State, Osman Mohammed Yusof Kibir, reiterating the keenness of the National Unity Government to achieve peace in Darfur, renewing commitment to all agreements signed with the armed movements as well as readiness of the government to resort to the negotiations table with the movements which did not sign the Darfur Peace Agreement without preconditions any where and at any time in order to end the suffering of the people and to restore stability and tranquility. In this regard, he further called on those movements to resort to wisdom and to uphold the high interests of the homeland and to respond to the calls of their own people for peace. The Governor hailed the joint UN-AU Mission for commemorating the occasion, saying that such occasions would enhance the relations and push forward the peace process. The Principal Deputy Joint Special Representative, Mr. Henry Anyidoho, representing the Joint Special Representative Mr. Rudolphe Adada, read the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's message for the International Day of Peace. The Secretary General appealed on the leaders and countries of the world to achieve peace to prevent eruption of conflicts and to combat poverty and hunger and to uphold the values of human rights. Mr. Anyidoho called on the people of Sudan to work for peace, particularly in Darfur and expressed appreciations over the talks held between the Vice President, Ali Osman Mohammed Taha, and the Senior Assistant of the President of the Republic, Meni Arku Menawi last Friday in El-Fashir, describing them as a step in the right direction. He further reiterated the commitment of the UNAMID to cooperate with the national unity government of North Darfur State toward boosting the peace process. It is to be noted that the celebrations included presentation of songs and poems for peace performed by the secondary school students and hakamat (traditional women poets). The UNAMID further distributed sport equipments to the secondary schools that participated in the celebration. MF/ BT
