DAR ES SALAAM, Jan.7 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania is to send between 600 and 800 soldiers to Darfur of Sudan to boost the joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission in the strife-torn region.

English newspaper The Citizen on Wednesday quoted Tanzanian Defense Minister Hussein Mwinyi as saying that the Tanzanian troops would be deployed as soon as they complete their current training.

But the defense minister did not give the exact date of departure of the Tanzanian soldiers.

The official told the newspaper that most of the Darfur-bound soldiers are from the country's infantry force and would join their counterparts from several other African countries in Sudan.

The move was deemed as a further gesture by Tanzania to help boost efforts to restore peace in the Sudanese region. Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete is currently serving as the rotating chairman of the African Union.
