Taha warns of hampering of Agricultural Development Programme
Khartoum, April 29 (SUNA) - Vice President of the Republic Ali Osman Mohamed Taha has warned of hazards of illegal possession of lands and imposition of illegal fees and taxes in impeding Agricultural Development Programme in the country. Addressing the National Assembly Tuesday, Taha called for correcting the concepts of lands' possession, affirming that the laws which organize land ownership and its uses in Sudan are the best ones worldwide, pointing out that the lands organization would be in accordance with the existing laws unless they are amended or cancelled pursuant to the Lands Commission which was stipulated by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and the interim constitution. The Vice President of the Republic reiterated emphasis on the need for political will of all the Sudanese people to participate in implementation of the agricultural development project as it is a programme for the society as a whole. He stressed the importance of the programme in realization of justice in all states, adding that the government wants the programme to be a tool for achieving justice to include sectors of producers, stressing that all the states are to take part in the programme to boost the agricultural development and to increase national income. Taha also stressed importance of state's macro policies coordination to make the programme a success, raising of producers' capacities, protection and development of natural resources besides provision of quality and safety of food as well as improvement of transport networks, irrigation system, electricity power and production and productivity through scientific research and technology transfer. The Vice President of the Republic stressed the importance of external partnerships in the aspects of finance and technology transfer with the aim to provide the world needs of food commodities, calling for reformulation of the producers' organizations to be able to develop capacities of their members and to direct them towards production. He also underscored importance of parliament role in the project, welcoming establishment of supervision and follow-up mechanism for the project implementation. Deliberating on the Vice President's address, members of the National Assembly affirmed importance of the programme and its role in realization of the agricultural development. Chairman of the National Congress Parliamentary Group Dr. Ghazi Salahuddin considered the programme as timely since it works for reformulation of the internal political system related to the economic reform and developments in the world pertinent to the food crisis. He considered the programme as part of immunity of the society, describing the projects of the agricultural development as projects for urban and social development and laying foundation for big progress in the society. Member of the National Assembly (SPLM) Ghazi Suleiman, on his part, said that the international circumstances are conducive for the Sudan to become the world food basket.
