Sudanese student frozen to death
By NADIA MOHARIB, CALGARY SUN |
Many Bow Valley College students are devastated after an immigrant woman who was studying English was apparently found frozen to death last week.
Sources said the woman, believed to be 37, was a mother and student originally from Sudan studying English as a second language.
Bow Valley director Katherine Cormack said students are grieving the loss.
She could not offer any details regarding the student, but said news of her death has shocked many at the close-knit campus.
"It certainly hits the community hard," she said yesterday. "We are a family here.
"We share our deepest sympathies with her family, friends and the community."
Counsellors are available for students trying to help those struggling with the news, Cormack said.
"Anytime someone who is in the midst of studies, whatever age they might be, are stopped short of reaching a goal -- and there's something incredibly sad about that," she said. "You feel for those involved."
The woman was reported missing on Feb. 6 and found by a friend outside a home on 39 St. S.E. the next day, sources said.
A medical examiner at the scene ruled the death as accidental and natural.
An autopsy will be conducted.
