Sudanese student drowns in Lingayen Beach

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Dec. 9 A Sudanese student drowned while swimming in Lingayen Beach here at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, according to the police.

The body of Raythem Ahmed, 27, a student of the University of Luzon in Dagupan City, was found floating in the water of the beach at about 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, barely 20 hours after he was reported missing.

Investigation showed that Ahmed went to swim in Lingayen Beach with a few friends but was carried away by big waves into the deeper portion of the sea and drowned.

The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council reported the matter to the Lingayen Police which immediately organized search and rescue teams to find the missing foreigner.

Last Saturday afternoon, three children and one teenager drowned in Agno town after they were carried by big waves while also swimming in the beach of that town.

A companion of the four survived after he was rescued by the police and elements of the Philippine Coast Guard.

The police warned beach combers to take extra-precaution while swimming in all the beaches of Lingayen Gulf during this time of the year due to dangerous big waves, usually occurring from December to January. (PNA)
