Sudan's president refuses to deal with ICC
Sunday, August 3, 2008

KHARTOUM, Sudan: Sudan's president says he refuses to deal with the international court whose prosecutor has charged him with war crimes and genocide in Darfur.

President Omar al-Bashir says "there will be no dealing with the so-called International Criminal Court." He says he wants to renew confidence in Sudan's local courts instead.

Last month, the ICC prosecutor indicted al-Bashir and asked the court for an arrest warrant. Sudan has not ratified the 1998 statute that established the ICC, and has refused to hand over two Sudanese wanted by the court.

He spoke Sunday at a rally of trade unionists in Khartoum.

The United Nations estimates that up to 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million have been displaced since 2003 in Darfur.
