Sudan, Nigeria to Revive Bilateral Agreements

09.04.2008

Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Awad Taha, has stated that plans are underway to revive bilateral agreements and trade between Nigeria and Sudan.
He announced this yesterday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Abuja.
“The relations between Nigeria and Sudan are deeply rooted in history but we need to revive and access the implementation of these agreements,'' Taha said.
He said there was a bi-national commission and a joint committee in charge of the agreements.
He said the committee which was established in 1998, would soon hold its second session, to finalise some of the agreements.
“We are now exchanging draft agreements and protocols in various fields which include economic, cultural, scientific and the exchange and training of professors and teachers,'' Taha added.
The Ambassador said the prospects of cooperation between both countries were enormous, stressing that there were still many areas to be explored.
Taha said there were plans to renew the media exchange programme, citing the NAN/SUNA agreement as an example.
“The agreement between NAN and SUNA needs to be repackaged, updated and renewed,'' the envoy said.
He commended Nigeria for playing a pivotal role in returning peace to Darfur in Sudan.
The envoy described his stay in Nigeria as very pleasant, adding that he was being well accommodated by ``the peace loving people of the country''.
NAN recalls that the envoy reported to Nigeria on Nov. 16 2007.
