WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer is in Khartoum, Sudan, discussing peace process with leaders of the country, the State Department said on Monday.

Frazer "is meeting with Sudanese government officials talking about the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) as well as Darfur," State Department deputy spokesman Robert Wood said at a routine news briefing.

What they are talking about are "important issues." "We want the situation improve on the ground," Wood said.

The CPA, signed in 2005, ended a 21-year war between southern Sudan and the government in Khartom.

Relations between Sudan and the United States have long been strained, most recently over the near five-year conflict in the western region of Darfur where Washington has accused Khartoum of genocide. Sudan's government denies the U.S. charge.
