One local Central Coast synagogue donates money to Sudanese refugees

Sudanese refugees are getting a helping hand from folks on the Central Coast.

Members of Temple Beth David donated money to purchase solar cookers for those in refugee camps.

The project is organized by the Jewish World Watch of Los Angeles.

"The way these cookers work is you have aluminum that reflects the sun and is able to heat a pot which is painted black which attracts the sun. The pot is put inside of a plastic bag which helps contain the heat and with in hours you can cook almost anything," said Janice Kamenir-Reznik, spokesperson for Jewish World Watch.

The cookers are an alternative to using wood as fuel to heat food.

Women who leave the refugee camps to get firewood are often subject to rape.

Not only do the cookers protect the women in the camps, they are also enviromentally friendly.
