Mubarak in Sudan to discuss Beshir genocide accusation

KHARTOUM (AFP) Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak arrived in Khartoum on Monday for talks with Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir on war crimes allegations he faces at the International Criminal Court.

The agenda for the one-day visit will include "the accusation made against Beshir by the prosecutor of the ICC," an Egyptian official told AFP, requesting anonymity.

ICC judges are looking at evidence presented in July to decide whether to issue an arrest warrant for Beshir on 10 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in the western region of Darfur.

Sudan is seeking to avert an ICC trial and convince a sceptical West that it is serious about unblocking stalled peace efforts in Darfur.

Mubarak said in July that he agreed with the African Union's position that Beshir be given time to implement a ceasefire in Darfur.

Both the African Union and the Arab League have asked the UN Security Council to delay an ICC decision on whether to arrest Beshir.

ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo in July accused the Sudanese leader of personally instructing his forces to annihilate three non-Arab ethnic groups in Darfur, where a civil war has been raging since 2003.
