Dubai: It was like a scene out of the American TV drama series Crime Scene Investigation as police officials and a forensics team rushed to investigate three car break-ins in Deira.

Three residents had their vehicles raided and vandalised in the basement parking of their building.

Police said the motive behind the crimes, which occurred in the early hours of yesterday, seemed to be "money related".

"These thieves were obviously looking for as much cash as they could find. Whoever is responsible for this probably did not work alone, they may have had someone standing by on the look-out," said a police officer from Al Muraqqabat Police Station. One of the car owners had Dh12,600 stolen from a briefcase inside his four-wheel drive as well as two mobile phones.

A security guard working at the building informed the car owners of the break-ins he spotted as he started to wash the cars just after 6am.

Police were immediately informed.

The forensics team dusted each vehicle for fingerprints, checking the doors, windows and anything else the thieves might have touched like CDs and papers.

Police officials took statements from each of the victims trying to find out exactly what had been stolen.

"The problem is there are no surveillance cameras in the parking area on the ground floor or the basement," said a police officer. "Placing cameras is important for the safety of the residents and to prevent such crimes."

The officers emphasised the importance of security in each building and highlighted the point that residents should take care of their possessions.

"Never leave anything valuable in your car whether money or jewellery. Always keep these things with you or in a safe place at all time," said the officer.

Reports were filed at Muraqqabat police station.
